Tenino Brush Fire Burns Six Acres, Threatens Buildings

A brush fire burned 6 acres of pasture land in Tenino Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters responded shortly after noon to the fire, which was located in the 1800 block of Goddard Road Southwest.

The fire threatened two nearby homes, but there didn't appear to be any structural damage to them, said Robert Scott, operations chief for West Thurston Fire Authority. No one was injured in the fire, he said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The West Thurston Fire Authority assisted the Tenino Fire Department. Other nearby fire departments and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources also responded, Scott said.

The fire exhibited some unique conditions for Western Washington, Scott said. He noted that the fire shot up a fir tree — an occurrence not uncommon in Eastern Washington, but unusual on this side of the mountains. It goes to show how dry the conditions are, he said.

Scott said the best thing people can do to prevent damage from fires while dry conditions persist is to create defensive space around their homes. Grass should be cut low and brush should be cleared, he said.

The DNR has implemented a statewide burn ban through Sept. 30 due to dry conditions.
