Providence to Host Wellness Forum and Book Signing on May 14

A wellness forum put on by Providence Regional Heart Center will discuss the benefits of exercising through a keynote speaker and cardiologist.

James Beckerman, Providence cardiologist, will talk about the importance of exercise in one’s life and the benefits that come along with it.

Those in attendance will receive a copy of Beckerman’s new book, “Heart to Start: The Eight-Week Exercise Prescription to Live Longer, Beat Heart Disease and Run Your Best Race.”

The book is the second one the Oregon-based cardiologist has published, and he said it is unique because it “rebrands” exercise, focusing on overall health and improved quality of life, instead of weight loss or appearances. Included within the pages are personal stories, scientific facts, tips and self-assessments.

The book focuses on an eight-week exercise program, helping to transform one’s health and create a more active lifestyle.

“I think the most beneficial thing they can get out of (the book) is reinforcement that exercise is not only about prevention, but it’s about intervention,” Beckerman said. “It’s to improve quality of life and become the healthiest version of yourself.”

Chris Thomas, marketing and communications manager for Providence Health & Services, said the book is for everyone at all different starting lines.

The doctor said prevention is for everyone, and there is no reason anyone should feel marginalized or left out in a message about wellness.

“If people are really looking for motivation to get kick started, want to feel included, and want a new way of thinking about stuff, I think this is the right event for that,” Beckerman said.

Representatives from Providence Regional Heart Center will be at the event to answer questions and interact.

Beckerman will provide those in attendance with tools to stay motivated, providing an online networking opportunity through the Heart to Start Facebook page. The opportunity to connect through social media gives those on the journey to wellness a place to know other community members are doing the same thing.

The wellness forum will take place at St. Martin’s University on Thursday, May 14, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Anyone planning to attend is asked to register at www.provregister.org, or call (855) 360-5475 to help organizers ensure enough books are on hand.
