College Vocal Ensembles to Perform at Harrison Square

The Centralia College Vocal Ensembles will present a free concert Monday, March 16, featuring music celebrating the holidays of January through March, along with selections from classical vocal music repertoire.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. at Harrison Square Presbyterian Church, Centralia.

The concert will open with songs in Latin set to music written by contemporary composers. The Latin works include “Benedictus” by Brian Lewis, “Ubi Caritas” by Mark Burrows and “Ave Maria” by Nicholas White. The choir will also perform “Alleluia” by Randall Thompson.

Celtic music to honor St. Patrick’s Day will include “The Wind that Shakes the Barley,” based on the poem by Robert Dwyer Joyce; “Banks of Doon,” based on a poem by 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns; “Wild Mountain Thyme,” by William McPeake, “May it Be,” from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; “An Irish Lullaby” by Alice Rose Denny; and “Soldiers’ Joy”, a medley of three folk songs.



Rounding out the program will be “Weep No More,” by David N. Childs, and “My True Love Has My Heart,” based on a poem by Sir Philip Sidney (1554-86) with new music by Laura Farnell (2011).

An addition to the evening’s program will be accompaniments by violin, flute, cello, and bodhran.

Anl offering will be collected, and all donations will be given to the Lewis County Food Bank.

The event is sponsored by Pro Musica, the Centralia College music club.
