Though leaders at local power providers such as the Centralia Steam-Electric Plant and the Lewis County Public Utility District have expressed concern over a sweeping energy bill currently working its way through Congress, at least one utility is pleased.
Puget Sound Energy, the nation’s second-largest utility owner of wind power, supports recent action by the U.S. House of Representatives in passing the American Clean Energy and Security Act, according to a news release.
Those opposed to the bill, which aims to cut carbon emissions and create a cap-and-trade program while steering investments toward renewable energy, have called it heavy-handed and convoluted.
But PSE’s president, Stephen Reynolds, said the utility’s stance is the same as many of its customers.
“New ways of thinking about how we produce and use energy are vital for both combating climate change and sparking the innovations that will boost our economy,” he said.
Washington state’s oldest local energy utility, Puget Sound Energy provides electrical and natural gas service in Thurston County, and provides natural gas service along the Interstate 5 corridor in Lewis County. The utility serves more than 1 million electric customers and nearly 750,000 natural gas customers in 11 Washington counties.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved the climate measure in June. The issue is expected to come to a vote before the Senate in the coming months.

The only beneficial environmental effect is that consumers won't have as much money left over to buy junk from China. And then China might start reducing production of REAL POLLUTION, namely the 10 billion pounds of non-CO2 aerosol pollutants that descend on North America annually. Why does Congress ignore pollution that gets into the biocycle? As for CO2, it is the GOOD gas. It's what makes Washington State green. More CO2 means more plant growth, less CO2 means more starvation. And a lot less, such as 150ppm, means nearly all plants on Earth DIE. They neglected to tell you that part, didn't they!
