WSU Extension Professor to Speak at Mycological Society Meeting
Jim Freed, natural resources Extension professor from the WSU Extension Service, will be the guest presenter at tonight’s meeting of the Southwest Washington Mycological Society.
Freed will talk about tree identification and the mycorrhizal relationships between trees and mushrooms. He will also discuss inoculating private forest lands with fungi.
Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every month, beginning at 6 p.m., in the WSU Extension meeting room in the Lewis County Courthouse basement.

Pygora Goats Expert to Speak at AAUW Meeting
The Lewis County chapter of the American Association of University Women will hold its general membership meeting at 6:45 p.m. Thursday at the Gathering Place at Stillwaters Estates in Centralia
Speaker will be Terri Kistler, of Whistlekick Pygoras in Winlock. Kistler holds a master’s degree in animal science and a bachelor’s in technical journalism, both from Oregon State University.
For 30 years, Kistler has worked in the technical writing field. Her latest project, which combines both her love of animals and her writing skills, is a book: “Raising Happy, Healthy Pygora Goats.” The book was released in June 2014 and has been accepted into the Library of Congress.
Pygora goats are predominantly raised for their fiber. As an avid spinner, knitter, crocheter and weaver, Kistler keeps part of the clip from her Pygoras each year for herself and sells the rest to other luxury fiber enthusiasts. Her presentation will include a slide show and hand-made articles from Pygora fiber.
The AAUW will be celebrating Priscilla Tiller’s 50th year of membership. The group will have a reception for Tiller immediately following the recognition of the Dr. Kate Gregg and Upper-Division scholarship recipients.

CC Professor to lead Wildflower Walk at Seminary Hill
Natural Area
Take a walk in the woods and stop to smell the flowers during this Thursday evening’s Wildflower Walk at the Seminary Hill Natural Area.
Lisa Carlson, botany professor at Centralia College, will guide this free nature walk, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Seminary Hill Natural Area.
Carlson will teach attendees to identify native wildflowers and enjoy the beauty of spring in this century-old native forest just blocks from downtown Centralia.
The walk begins at 6:30 p.m., rain or shine. Meet at the Barner Drive entrance to the natural area at the eastern end of Locust Street.
The next event at the natural area will be the annual Bird Walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 13.

Children’s Theatre to Offer ‘Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Junior’
The OnStage Children’s Theatre Education Program is presenting “Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka Junior” at Morton’s Roxy Theater Friday, Sunday and May 15 and 17.
“Willy Wonka Junior” is a story about the world-famous candy man and his quest to find and heir.
The May 8 and 15 shows will be at 7 p.m., and the May 10 and 17 shows will be at 2 p.m.

Historical Ride Set for Day Before Mother’s Day
Bicyclists will be cruising the hills and valleys of west Lewis County during the 33th annual Lewis County Historical Ride Saturday, the day before Mother’s Day.
The event will be offering a choice of four loop rides, all beginning and ending at Stan Hedwall Park, just west of Interstate 5 exit 76, Chehalis.
If the weather cooperates, there will be views of Mount Adams, Mount St. Helens and Mount Rainier. Three of the routes will go by the the historic Evaline School and Claquato Church.
The lengths of the four rides are 20, 48, 69 and 100 miles. There are five rest stops for water, drinks and food.
Other amenities are along the marked courses are informational flyers, SAG wagons, on-site basic assistance and repairs. Lewis County ham radio volunteers will be available throughout the ride.
All riders are required to wear an approved helmet. Eye protection and cycling gloves are recommended.
Riders under 16 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or other responsible adult.
Single-rider entry fees are $35 in advance and $45 the day of the ride for the 20- and 48-mile rides. The fees are $45 in advance and $55 the day of the race for the 60- and 100-mile rides.
Tandem (pilot and stoker) fees are $40 in advance and $50 the day of the ride for the two shorter rides. For the longer rides, the fees are $50 in advance and $60 the day of the ride.
Children under 16 ride free with a parent or guardian.
On-site registration will be 7-9:30 a.m. the day of the ride.

Prairie Appreciation Day Planned for May 9
On Saturday, the Friends of Puget Prairies and their partners are holding Prairie Appreciation Day on the South Sound prairies at Thurston County’s Glacial Heritage and the Department of Natural Resources Mima Mounds Natural Areas, two of the largest remaining remnants of the endangered prairie ecosystem in Western Washington.
The event runs 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At Glacial Heritage Preserve, there are two interpretive loops, one of about 2 miles (the Activity Trail) and the other about 4 miles (the Self-Guided Trail).
The Activity Trail contains a number of informative stations covering various aspects of the South Sound prairies. They include topics such as prairie ecology, restoration, management of invasive plants, and the wildlife and wildflowers found in this unique ecosystem.
The stations have experts to discuss each topic as well as activities for children and the young at heart.
The Self-Guided Trail has interpretive signs pointing out many of the unique features of these prairies, and is a good choice for those who just want to absorb the ambiance.
The Black Hills Audubon Society will be hosting early morning bird walks at Glacial Heritage. Check its website http://blackhills-audubon.org/ for details.
Mima Mounds is fully handicapped accessible with a paved trail that is ideal for families with toddlers and those who want a less strenuous experience. In addition, group tours of Mima Mounds can be arranged by sending an email to prairieappreciationday@gmail.com.

To drive to Prairie Appreciation Day, take Interstate 5 to Exit 95. Go west through Littlerock on 128th Street. Drive straight through Littlerock (note that the other two directions of traffic at the intersection with Littlerock Road do not stop) until you reach a stop sign at the T in the road.
For Glacial Heritage, turn Left at the Tonto Mima Road. Drive south 2.7 miles and turn left at the event sign onto a gravel road. Drive to the gate of Glacial Heritage and follow parking directions.
For Mirna Mounds, turn right at the T onto Waddell Creek Road. Drive north approximately seven-tenths of a mile until you see the event sign. Turn left into Mima Mounds Natural Area Preserve.
Fox Theatre to Show ‘Rebel Without a Cause’
“Rebel Without a Cause” will be screened at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.
The film stars James Dean, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood and Corey Allen. Admission for is $8 per person, $7 for Historic Fox Theatre Restorations members, and $20 per family (three to four persons).
