The Centralia man accused of raping and murdering his girlfriend’s 2-year-old daughter will undergo a mental health evaluation to determine whether he is competent to stand trial.

James Maurice Reeder was charged earlier this month with homicide by abuse, two counts of rape of a child, two counts of assault and possession of methamphetamine.

His attorney requested the evaluation and Lewis County Superior Court Judge James Lawler approved it.

Reeder will be transferred to Western State Hospital for 15 days for a mental health evaluation. He will appear in court again on July 5.

Karolynn Fister was pronounced dead shortly after Reeder claimed she drowned in a bathtub at a home near West Oakview Avenue in north Centralia.

Investigators found evidence of prolonged abuse and “systematic torture,” according to court documents.
