Centralia College is offering a one-day workshop designed to put fun back into learning the piano.

In the Just for Fun piano workshop, students will quickly learn how to play any song using style chords. The workshop is perfect for absolute beginners, as well as those who previously took and gave up on traditional piano lessons.

The workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Cost is $60 plus a $25 fee for a practice book and CD to take home. Early registration is recommended. To register, call (360) 736-9391, ext. 427.

Portland musician Donn Rochlin designed the Just for Fun piano workshop after learning 98 percent of children and adults give up on piano lessons in the first two years.

“I call it PTPLSD – Post Traumatic Piano Lesson Stress Disorder,” he said. “There is nothing wrong with learning notes, scale and the more linear aspects of playing piano, but the problem begins when these skills are introduced as mandatory protocol before fun and exploration is allowed. I believe when students have fun learning and they see positive results from the start they are inspired to stick with it. This workshop lays the foundation for a lifetime of creative expression and enjoyment making music.”

Rochlin has been teaching this popular workshop at colleges and universities in more than 65 cities since 1993. He is a professional pianist, composer, teacher and author whose credits include numerous theater productions, soundtracks and live performances. Students will take home a CD and workbook that will allow them to review the entire workshop at any time.
