Editor's Best Bet: Cowlitz Pow Wow Comes to Toledo Saturday
The Cowlitz Indian Tribe will be “Honoring the Spirit of All Cowlitz People” at the 15th annual Pow Wow Saturday at Toledo High School.
The Pow Wow is a full-day event, from noon until 10 p.m., and admission is free.
Master of Ceremonies Don Ryan (Cowlitz Tribe) will conduct grand entries at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the assistance of Arena Director Kevin King (Seneca-Oneida Tribes). Head Woman and Head Man Dancers, Ed (Yupik-Athabascan Tribes) and Vickie Wulf (Nipissing First Nation), will be hosts throughout the day and into the evening.
Grey Eagle will serve as Honor Drum and the Allen Family Singers will be Host Drum.
As in past years, veterans of all military services, whether Native or not, will be recognized and honored just after the grand entries with a handmade gift. The Cowlitz Drum Group will provide special presentations of their drumming and singing after each grand entry.
Dance contests will be held during the afternoon and evening sessions, with a diverse variety of contests that will provide for participation from all of the age ranges. There will be drumming, dancing and vendors selling crafts and food items throughout the day and evening.
Raffles will be ongoing throughout the event: a general raffle, a Pendleton blanket raffle, and 50/50 raffles. These, along with food concessions and sales of merchandise specific to the Cowlitz Pow Wow, will help the Pow Wow committee raise funds to cover the expenses of the event.
A free dinner will be served at 5 p.m.; donations are accepted and appreciated. After dinner and before the 7 p.m. Grand Entry, a children’s program with games will entertain youth who wish to participate.

Fifth Annual Wellness Roundup Planned
The fifth annual Wellness Roundup, Lewis County’s largest health fair, will take place
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the corner of Cooks Hill and Scheuber roads, Centralia.
The event will feature free health screenings, educational information, giveaways and fun. The event has several components, including:
Women’s Wellness Fair
Physicians from the Providence Medical Group and the Breast, Cervical and Colon Health Program will be offering free clinical breast exams and digital mammograms for women who qualify.
Free Health Screenings
• Providence Centralia Diabetes and Nutrition Center staff will provide free blood sugar tests, and provide information on healthy eating, answer diabetes questions and more.
• Providence Lab staff will provide free cholesterol screening (please fast the morning of for best results).
• Providence SoundHomeCare and Hospice nurses will provide free blood pressure checks, provide free “Five Wishes” booklets and will be available to answer questions on hospice services in the area.
• Washington Orthopaedic Center will offer free bone density screenings.
• Providence pharmacists will perform free medication/prescription checks.
Fun, Giveaways and Educational Information
More than 100 community health partners will have booths at the fair. Enjoy free bike helmets, win a free lunch, sign up to win $500, free books, a giant bounce house and horse-drawn carriage rides. Join the SeaFair Pirates and walk through a 28-foot salmon to learn about water conservation/preservation, and much more.
Cooks Hill Challenge/Run for the Kids
Presented by Centralia Rotary, this 10-mile or 5k run/walk will raise funds to help end polio through the March of Dimes. The 10-mile run begins at 8 a.m. and costs $25. The 5k run/walk starts at 8:30 a.m. and costs $20. Registration for both events begins at 7 a.m.
Free Concert to Wrap Up the Day
The music of Rock City, sponsored by the Lucky Eagle Casino, will wrap up this year’s event from 1-2 p.m.

Fox Theatre to Screen ‘An American in Paris’
Historic Fox Theatre Restorations is screening the next film in its 2014 Movie Series, “An American in Paris,” 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia
As an additional treat, Fred Beeks will be on hand to play the Fox Theatre organ before each screening.
Admission for the movie is $8 per person, $7 for members and $20 per family (three or four persons).
Pre-sale tickets are available at Book ‘n’ Brush in Chehalis and Debbie’s Boutique, Holley’s Place, HUBBUB and Santa Lucia Coffee in Centralia. Holley’s Place and the new Fox Theatre concession stand supply movie snacks, including popcorn, nachos, hot dogs, pretzels, drinks and more!

Mount Rainier to Host Stargazing Party
The Paradise area of Mount Rainier National Park is having a star viewing party on Saturday.
The event starts at 9:30 p.m. in the plaza in front of the Jackson Visitor Center at Paradise. If the sky remains clear, the event will last until at least 11:30 p.m.
The outdoor stargazing will be led by the 2014 Mount Rainier Astro-Volunteer team. These volunteers donate the use of their personal telescopes for the public and educate about the night skies.
If weather makes stargazing difficult, the party will move inside to the lobby of the Paradise Inn for a “Meet the Astronomers” question and answer session. Materials to make a special “Star-Finder” device will also be available at no charge.
