Flowers on Display at Prairie Appreciation Day

The 22nd annual Prairie Appreciation Day is coming to the South Sound Prairies of Thurston County Saturday.

This year’s celebration is 10 a.m.-3 p.m., with free admission.

In May, the prairie is spangled with swaths of blue Camas with accents of yellow spring gold and buttercups. With this year’s cool spring, it looks like Prairie Appreciation Day will be the peak of the Camas bloom.

This year, there are five locations to choose from. They include three near Littlerock: Glacial Heritage Preserve, the main event; Department of Natural Resources Mima Mounds Natural Area; and the Shotwell’s Landing Seed Nursery demonstration garden. Two are located near Tenino: Colvin Ranch Hayrides and Violet Prairie Scatter Creek Seed Farm.

Glacial Heritage: There are two interpretive loops, one of about 1 mile (the Activity Trail) and the other about 4 miles (the Self-Guided Trail). The Activity Trail contains a number of informative stations covering various aspects of the South Sound prairies. They include topics such as prairie ecology, restoration, management of invasive plants, and the wildlife and wildflowers found in this unique ecosystem.

The stations have experts to discuss each topic as well as activities for children and the young at heart. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the hayride around the prairie back to the start. The Self-Guided Trail has interpretive signs pointing out many of the unique features of the prairie, and is a good choice for those who just want to absorb the ambiance.

Black Hills Audubon Society will be hosting a 7:30 a.m. bird walk at Glacial Heritage. Details are available at //blackhills-audubon.org/.

Mima Mounds: Walk around the mounds in full flower and learn restoration techniques like broom pulling. This location is fully handicapped accessible with a paved trail that is ideal for families with toddlers and those who want a less strenuous experience. In addition, group tours of Mirna Mounds can be arranged by sending an email to prairieappreciationday@gmail.com.

Shotwell’s Landing Seed Nursery: Walk the paths through a native plant demonstration garden and learn how to grow your own.

Colvin Ranch: Take a hayride on the hour from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and see this beautiful working ranch abloom with native prairie flowers.

Violet Prairie Seed Farm: Walk the paths through hundreds of rows of intense color as the farm native prairie plants on the farm are in full bloom.

As part of Prairie Appreciation Day, Friends of Puget Prairies will be collecting donations for the Thurston County Food Bank. Anyone wishing to donate may do so at either Glacial Heritage or Mirna Mounds. (No glass, please.)

More information and directions can be found on the Friends of Puget Prairies website at http://www.prairieappreciationday.org, or by calling either 360-458-5450 or 206-498-3273.

Signs will be posted on the roadside to all locations.

AAUW to Host LUNAFEST Film Festival

Open House at Borst Home to Feature Roundtrees

An open house for the the Borst Home, Carriage Museum and One-Room Schoolhouse will be 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Borst Home is located at the south end of Fort Borst Park in Centralia.

This month’s focus is on Dr. James and Emeline Roundtree, who were Mary Borst’s parents. They came from Illinois on an 1852 wagon train to settle in the west. They built the first church on Fords Prairie in 1871, and six years later dismantled it and rebuilt it by the railroad tracks in the newly established town of Centralia.

The Roundtrees and Mary and Joseph Borst lived by this little church, where they were charter members and worshipped. Later it was moved further from the tracks.

The speaker this month is Jean Bluhm, who will give the Roundtree history and explain about building a replica of their early church across from the Pioneer school to create a Pioneer village.
