George Washington Celebration to Include Party, Open House, Church Service, Rededication

A free party focusing on the bicentennial of the Centralia founder George Washington will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in Centralia’s George Washington Park, located next to the city’s Timberland Library.

The same day, a pioneer open house will be held at the Borst home in Centralia’s Fort Borst Park

The open house will feature Karel Campbell discussing the heirloom gardens 1:30-3 p.m. and Bev York talking at the Pioneer Church site regarding Joseph Borst’s story about cattle raising.

At 3:30 p.m. on the Borst Home lawn will be the Rosie and Posers band entertaining and auctioning delicious baked goods to help build the Borst Pioneer Church there beside the Borst Home and One-Room Schoolhouse.

Two years ago, Rosie and the Posers did a concert and made over $1,000 to help with upkeep on the 167-year-old Borst Home.

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, an interdenominational church service complete with era-appropriate hymns will be held in George Washington Park, and on Tuesday, Washington’s actual birthday, a rededication ceremony will be held at 4 p.m. at Centralia College’s Washington Hall in order to officially designate the building as a memorial to Centralia’s boundary-breaking founder.

In August 2018, the George Washington Committee plans to unveil a large bronze statue of George Washington, Mary Jane Washington and their dog, Rockwood, in Washington Park in front of the Timberland Library. The committee has commissioned Adna artist Jim Stafford to create the statue. The committee is attempting to raise $100,000 for the project.

It’s Billed as the ‘Granddaddy of All Logging Shows’

The 2017 edition of the timber-centric celebration will be the 75th year of the Morton Loggers Jubilee. The logging show, which runs through Sunday at Jubilee Arena, attracts competitors in such events as log rolling, choker setting, ax throwing, speed climbing and much more in the centerpiece of the action.

Other events for the entire family include the always-hilarious bed races that go from one city block to the next, lawnmower races at Jubilee Arena and a 10K run. Two parades offer entertainment for all ages: the Children’s Parade always precedes the Grand Parade on Saturday morning.

The big attraction this year is Morton native and nationally-renowned country artist Brandy Clark, who will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday in Jubilee Arena.  Tickets are available at  www.ticketfly.com/event/1509729-brandy-clark-celebrating-big-morton/

Bluegrass Festival Continues in Toledo

The Washington Bluegrass Association will present one of its most diverse lineups ever at the 2017 Mount St. Helens Bluegrass Festival, which continues through Sunday at Toledo High School.

An onstage reunion of one of bluegrass music’s most respected brother acts, a family band featuring three teen musical prodigies, two energetic California groups and a Northwest band that has played inside the cockpit of Howard Hughes’ legendary eight-engine Spruce Goose airplane all will be performing.

“In the past, we’ve brought in everything but the kitchen sink,” says WBA president General Cothren of Winlock, “but I think the sink’s coming this year, too.  I don’t know if we’ve ever had musicians from so many backgrounds come to Toledo at the same time.”

The festival will be headlined by the nationally-acclaimed Larry Gillis & Swampgrass, featuring Gillis’ brother John on guitar. The Georgia-based Gillis Brothers were one of America’s most popular bluegrass bands of the 1990s and early 2000s until a 2003 logging accident left John unable to tour.

While Swampgrass will represent the Deep South, Missouri’s Baker Family will be the Midwest’s standard bearers.  Mother Carrie Baker leads a group including sons Trustin (age 17) and Elijah (13) plus daughter Carina (15).

The Baker Family was named the International Country Gospel Music Association’s Bluegrass Band of the Year in 2016 and will be arriving in Toledo a week after their second onstage stint in Branson, Missouri, this year.  Eldest son Trustin has won fiddling championships in five states and is a two-time Grand National competition runnerup in Nashville.

California’s Central Valley Boys will return for a second year in a row after wowing the Toledo audience with their tight music, onstage humor and a wardrobe straight out of Porter Wagoner’s closet (they wore matching blue and green outfits for one set in honor of the Seahawks).  Another Golden State group, the Roustabouts, of Bakersfield, will make their Mount St. Helens debut featuring what they term “suits, boots and hard-drivin’ bluegrass.”

Rounding out the lineup will be Portland veterans Great Northern Planes, who’ve been joined onstage by none other than Bill Monroe and also performed on the legendary Spruce Goose, a video of which can be viewed on YouTube under the title “Spruce Goosegrass.”

Ticket prices are $20 for the Saturday evening performances and $25 for all day Saturday,  and weekend passes will be sold for $35. The event will close with a traditional gospel show for free Sunday morning at the Toledo High School commons.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact Cothren at (360) 785-3478 or log on to www.washingtonbluegrassassociation.org.
