Rochester to Host 38th Annual Swede Day
It’s all about Swedes Saturday as the Rochester community celebrates the 38th annual Swede Day.
The festival’s highlight, the Swede Day Parade, starts at 11 a.m. on U.S. Highway 12 and ends at Swede Hall. The highway is closed for through traffic starting at 10:30 a.m.
Presiding over the parade will be Swede Day Queen Elizabeth Miller and her court Shelby Baird, Allison Beagley, Katie Long and Krimzyn Robarge.
The Kiwanis pancake breakfast will be served 8-10 a.m. at Swede Hall, featuring pancakes, scrambled eggs, orange juice and coffee. Cost is $8 for adults and $5 for those 10 and under. The price for a family of up to five members is $24.
From noon until 3 p.m., the Grand Mound Rochester Citizens Group, host of Swede Day, will serve an authentic Svenska Kottbular (Swedish meatball) lunch. Cost is age 12 to adult $8, 6 to 11 $4 and under 6 free.
A variety of entertainment will be at Swede Hall. Here is the schedule:

‘I Am Not Your Negro’ to Be Shown at Methodist Church
The film “I Am Not Your Negro” will be shown 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church, Centralia.
“I Am Not Your Negro” offers a snapshot of James Baldwin’s crucial observations on American race relations — and a sobering reminder of how far we have yet to go.
The program is presented by Fire Mountain Chapter Fellowship of Reconciliation and Veterans For Peace Chapter 109.

Egg Days Coming
to Winlock
Winlock comes alive comes alive Friday and Saturday as the Lewis County community celebration celebrates its poultry tradition with Winlock Egg Days.
At one time, Winlock was one of the top producers of eggs in the world.
A parade functions as the centerpiece of the celebration, which also includes tours of the Winlock Historical Museum, classic car and tuner shows, and the time-honored tradition of feeding attendees with egg salad sandwiches.
The Egg Day Queen coronation takes place on the first evening of the festival, with the Queen serving as the living logo of the celebration for the next calendar year.
The big parade will be at 11 a.m. June 17 in downtown Winlock, and the festival really cranks up right when the parade ends.

Local Chefs to Be Featured at Chef’s Night Out
Local chefs will be displaying their culinary skills at 6 p.m. Saturday during Chef’s Night Out at the Lucky Eagle Casino Event Center.
Chef’s Night Out brings together Lewis County’s finest restaurants and chefs under one roof for an evening full of culinary creativity and excitement. Guests will enjoy delectable samples from each chef and have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dishes in the Top Chef competition.
Also featured are live and silent auctions, superb cuisine, Cuban music and more.
Over the last eight years, Chef’s Night Out, presented by United Way of Lewis County, has brought in over $300,000, helping thousands of children and families in Lewis County achieve their full potential and lead healthy, productive lives.
Tickets are $75 person. Tables of 10 available. Advanced reservations are required.

Chili Cook Off Coming to Awesome RV
Awesome RV in Chehalis has partnered with the International Chili Society to host the Official Washington State Chili Cook Off at the Awesome RV dealership on Saturday.
Top cooks from all over the nation will come to compete for a spot in the World’s Championship Chili Cook Off.
There will be three different competitions taking place (red chili, chili verde and salsa). The event is open to the public and tasting sampler kits are available in exchange for a small donation.
All proceeds raised from this event will go to Visiting Nurses.
Time schedule:
7-8:30 am. — unload and setup
9:30 a.m. — cooks meeting (all categories)
10 a.m. — chili verde, stoves on
11:30 a.m. — salsa, judges meeting
Noon — salsa, turn in for judging
12:30 pm — chili verde, judges meeting

3 p.m. — red chilli, turn in for judging

Leap the Levee 5K Coming
The 2017 Leap the Levee 5k run/walk will be at 9 a.m. Saturday starting at the Chehalis-Centralia Airport.
The race commences at the Scott Crossfield Building. The initial stage is south of the airport buildings. It then follows the levee to the north, eventually doubling back on the levee and returns to the start/finish line.
Awards will be presented to the top three males and females, winning masters runners and overall top male and female.
Day of race registration is $15 or $25 with a T-shirt (pending availability).

Fairyblossom Festival Coming to Yard Birds
The Fairyblossom Festival is coming to the Yard Birds Mall Saturday and Sunday.

Professional Genealogist to Talk About Palatines
What is a Palatine?
That is the question Jim Johnson will be answering during a meeting of the Lewis County Genealogical Society at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Johnson will will explore where they came from, where they settled, and how people can find lists of Palatine names and information about these German and/or Irish ancestors. Johnson will talk about the resources genealogists can use to make their Palatine connection.
Johnson is is the director of the Heritage Quest Research Library in Sumner and is the president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists.
He has been active in genealogy for over 25 years and has been teaching genealogy topics throughout the Northwest for the last 15 years. He enjoys helping people to get started in family research and is an avid bridge player.
