Lewis County Officially Accepts $3.78M Grant for Borst Avenue Safety Project

Following the news that Lewis County received $3,787,140 in funding from the Transportation Improvement Board for the Borst Avenue safety project, the Board of Lewis County Commissioners officially approved the agreement on Monday so it could receive the money.

The funding from the Transportation Improvement Board will cover about 75 percent of the project, which will address safety concerns on Borst Avenue. The road lacks sidewalks and is heavily used by students on their way to Centralia High School.

The remaining 25 percent of the project — or about $1.3 million — will be split proportionally between Lewis County and the city of Centralia, depending on which jurisdiction the work takes place in. Both the county and city own certain portions of the roadway, which will be designed into a two-way street with a path on one side of the road separated by a median.

The Borst Avenue project is a priority on the county’s 2018-2023 six year transportation improvement program. It was submitted to the Transportation Improvement Board as part of a competitive grant program and scored well enough to receive the funding, which was approved on Nov. 17.

According to previous reporting by The Chronicle, the project is set to go to bid and be constructed in 2019.

“It’s going to be a great project,” Erik Martin, public works director for the county, said on Monday.
