Kids at the NW Sports Hub in Centralia on Sunday played ring toss, oversized Jenga and Plinko, competed against one another in a blowup obstacle course and were entertained by a magician.

The Family Fun Day event raised money for scholarships to Camp Cispus in honor of three children, Ben, Maddy and Sam Tower, who were killed in a house fire in March in Centralia.

Ben, 12, had attended Camp Cispus last year and was looking forward to it. Maddy, 10, was looking forward to attending in a few years.

Amanda Berg, who helped to organize the event, said it was a big success.

“It was so much fun, and it was such an awesome opportunity,” Berg said. “I felt like it was healing for our community.”

She said about 240 to 250 people attended, and more than $3,200 was raised for scholarships for kids. The funds raised should be enough to send about 20 kids to camp.

“I definitely know Ben, Maddy and Sam would be really proud of that,” she said.

Berg said an account for the money has been set up, and the details for how scholarships will be awarded is being worked out.

She said many people who attended asked if it will be held again next year, and Berg hopes it will be.

Tickets for the event were $5 per person or $20 for a family of five. Those attending the event also received an orange rubber bracelet with the kids’ names and the words “Pay it Forward.”

Berg said many organizations and businesses in the community helped make the event successful.

Another fundraiser called A Dinner with a Purpose at Hub City Grub was originally scheduled for April 30, but Berg said it is being rescheduled to October.
