Echoes of an Eruption: Former Deputy Shares Dispatch Recording, Experiences of May 18, 1980

This is an audio recording of the Cowlitz County 911 Center dispatch during the Mount St. Helens eruption on the morning of May 18, 1980. The audio includes 911 conversations between dispatch and former Cowlitz County sheriff Les Nelson, deputies, concerned citizens and others. The audio also includes commentary from Bob Nix, who was a Cowlitz County sheriff's detective at the time and provided this recording. He's narrating the audio along with Chronicle reporter Eric Trent. Portions of the recording might include language some will find offensive. The audio has been lightly edited to remove static.

George Barker was the resident Skamania County Deputy at Pine Creek just south of the mountain. He flew many missions looking for survivors in the mud flows and ash.
