Fire Near White Pass Now at More Than 1,000 Acres, Continues to Burn Uncontained

The Miriam Fire near White Pass is now at 1,034 acres and continues to burn uncontained as of Sunday morning, according to an update from the Northwest Interagency Coordination Center.

The increase from more than 800 acres reported Saturday partially reflects updated mapping data from an infrared plane, said incident spokesman Paul Galloway.

"Up to this point, we've been estimating acreage through folks on the ground," he said. With the new data, "the acreage looks a bit different."

But officials reported there was increased fire activity until Saturday afternoon when a thunderstorm dampened portions of the fire. The update also noted additional lightning strikes along the crest of the Cascades, including within the fire area. As a result, firefighters may have to respond to more fires.

Nearly 230 responders are now fighting the lightning-induced fire, including three 20-person crews, two helicopters, 14 engines and one bulldozer.

Fire officials said they will offer additional details on suppression activities, evacuations and closures at a meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday at White Pass Village Inn.
