Speeding likely caused a vehicle to crash into a barrier on southbound Interstate 5 near Winlock Monday night, injuring its two occupants, according to the Washington State Patrol.

At 11:16 p.m. on Monday, the State Patrol received a report of the crash near milepost 63 of I-5.

The vehicle, a 1997 Toyota Celica, was heading southbound on the freeway when it left the road and hit the median. The vehicle hit the barrier, crossed both southbound lanes, rolled, and came to rest on its top on the right shoulder.

The driver, Carlos Y. Batista, 19, of Lacey, was injured and transported to Providence Centralia Hospital. He is facing charges of second-degree reckless driving. The crash was caused by the vehicle traveling too fast for conditions, according to the State Patrol.

A passenger, Martelli L. White, 19, of Lacey, was also injured and transported to Providence Centralia.
