Train Sparks Brush Fires in South Thurston County

A train passing through an area near Old Highway 9 and Highway 12 in the Rochester area sparked six small fires Tuesday in a span of two miles, according to the West Thurston Regional Fire Authority.

West Thurston and Department of Natural Resources firefighters responded and brought the brush fires under control. A DNR helicopter also responded.

The train was stopped to allow fire crews to extend hoses under cars to reach a burning area inaccessible otherwise, according to the RFA.

“Our crews are working with DNR and the railroad to not only pinpoint the mechanical issue that caused the fire but work to prevent it from occurring in the future,” according to a social media post from the RFA.
