Sheriff’s Office Investigating Vehicle Prowls at Packwood Trailhead

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a spate of vehicle prowls at a trailhead in Packwood, which included multiple vehicles being broken into, some moved and one stolen.

The stolen vehicle was recovered in Lakewood a day after it was reported stolen, said LCSO Chief Deputy Dusty Breen.

Breen said that on Aug. 25, campers returning to a parking area at a trailhead off Snyder Road in Packwood discovered their vehicles had been prowled. The window to a Chevrolet Silverado was shattered and wiring to the battery and truck computer were cut. Despite the damage, nothing seemed to be stolen other than portions of the wiring allowing for battery hookup.

A Dodge pickup truck that had originally been chained to a trailer had been moved from its original position, while the trailer remained in the parking lot.

A door to another trailer had been wedged open, and two all-terrain vehicle helmets were stolen along with a tank of gasoline.

A Ford F250 was stolen from the lot. It was recovered Monday in Lakewood.

Breen said the various cases are under active investigation, and appear to have happened at around the same time. All of the vehicles had been parked for a while as the owners were camping — but some were there longer than others, the longest being up to one week.

Additionally, Breen encouraged anyone preparing to engage in outdoor recreational activity to make note of the belongings being left behind in vehicles.
