The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching from an Ohio man who is suspected to be in the Blue Lake area near Mount St. Helens. He disappeared Aug. 9.

A Monday update from the sheriff’s office announced that a search for Matthew B. Matheny, 40, of Warren, Ohio, was ongoing following weekend searches that uncovered some evidence. Detectives working on the case are not suggesting any foul play.

Matheny disappeared early Aug. 9 after leaving to head to Mount St. Helens, the sheriff’s office reported, traveling in a local friend’s Subaru Outback. The friends subsequently filed a missing person report when he did not return.

In the time since the report, sheriff’s deputies have located the vehicle, unoccupied at the Blue Lake trailhead in Cowlitz County. Subsequent investigations in the area have failed to turn up any more evidence.

Matheny is a white male, 6-4, 230 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes. He may be wearing a gray Cleveland Browns sweatshirt, shorts and sandals.

Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office is looking to speak with anyone who had been on the Blue Lake Trail since Aug. 9 for interviews about the case, regardless of if they encountered Matheny or the vehicle during their trip. The sheriff’s office number is 360-577-3092.
