The Lewis County Sheriff’s Office responded Saturday after a pipe bomb filled with gunpowder was found on a dike in Centralia.

The explosive device was reported at 11:24 a.m. on Saturday on top of a dike in the 1200 block of Long Road in Centralia.  The pipe with capped ends was about 8 inches long.

Deputies contacted the Washington State Patrol Bomb Unit, which responded and safely disposed of the explosive at 2:57 p.m. that day. The bomb was determined to be genuine.

“This is not totally uncommon,” said Chief Deputy Bruce Kimsey of the sheriff’s office. “It seems pipe bombs are usually found maybe once or twice a year.”
