Onalaska Brush Fire Burns Mobile Home

A brush fire in Onalaska was put to a halt by fire crews about 150 feet from houses Thursday night after burning an unoccupied mobile home.

Fire personnel were still on-site Friday putting out hotspots.

Chief Duran McDaniel of Lewis County Fire District 8 in Salkum said the blaze’s origin is under investigation by the DNR and Lewis County Fire Marshal.

Starting somewhere in the 700 block of Jorgensen Road, the fire reached and consumed an unoccupied mobile home, said McDaniels. The area also had debris like old tires that were kicking up black smoke, and high temperatures caused for fire crews to swap out to avoid heat exhaustion.

Firefighters dumped 30,000 gallons of water on the fire.

Water had to be hauled about three or four miles to the scene.

Thermal imaging from Thursday night indicated the fire had been knocked down, and McDaniel told The Chronicle that he and other firefighters were still on-scene putting out hotspots that had flared up.

In total, 37 district firefighters and nine DNR firefighters responded to the scene. District 8 was assisted by crews from Districts 1, 2, 3 and 5.
