In 2007, Guadalupe Solis Diaz, convicted as a teenager in a drive-by shooting in which no one was injured, was sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison.

Eleven years and multiple appeals later, Solis Diaz’s sentence was reduced Tuesday to 30 years in prison by Lewis County Superior Court Judge Andrew Toynbee.

Solis Diaz was initially sentenced to 92 years. The sentence was overturned by an appeals court judge, but reinstated by Superior Court Judge Nelson Hunt.

It was overturned again in 2016 and in 2017 Hunt was disqualified by the appeals court from sentencing Solis Diaz again.

On Tuesday, Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer Asked for a 43-year-sentence, while Solis Diaz’s attorney asked for time served. Toynbee split the difference and imposed 30 years, Meyer said.

Two expert witnesses and a man believed to be the target of the shooting testified at the sentencing hearing, Meyer said.
