A man who stabbed a fellow customer at Centralia’s McDonald’s restaurant in July 2015 after a dispute entered a guilty plea Wednesday in Lewis County Superior Court.

Calvin John Beck, 51, of Olympia, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault while armed with a deadly weapon.

He was sentenced to 108 months, or nine years, in prison.

Beck has previous convictions for fourth-degree assault, second-degree assault and first-degree theft. His standard sentencing range for the most recent conviction was 13 to 17 months in prison, plus a 12-month sentencing enhancement due to the deadly weapon charge.

However, according to court documents, Beck agreed to receive the higher sentence, of 96 months plus the 12-month enhancement, in exchange for the state reducing his charge from first-degree assault to second-degree assault.

At 12:10 p.m. on July 5, 2015, Beck was at the Centralia McDonald’s in the 1200 block of Lum Road when he allegedly became abusive toward staff, and another man asked him to leave, according to court documents.

Beck reportedly left, then came back with a 4-inch folding knife and stabbed the man in the stomach.

The injured man reportedly helped other bystanders hold Beck down until officers arrived. He was later transported to Providence Centralia Hospital for treatment and recovered.

On July 14, Beck was ordered to go to Western State Hospital for a 90-day mental health evaluation.

He was examined again at Western State in November. On Dec. 14, he was declared competent to stand trial in Lewis County Superior Court.
