A King County man is facing a felony charge in Lewis County after allegedly leading a Washington State Patrol trooper on an early-morning chase Wednesday on Interstate 5.

Lewis County Superior Court Judge Andrew Toynbee set bail at $10,000 for Derrick A. Berry, 28, of Bellevue during Berry’s first appearance on the class C felony charge of attempting to elude an officer.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the state trooper attempted to pull Berry over on suspicion of speeding at 5:20 a.m. Wednesday near milepost 66 of I-5 northbound, which is three miles north of the Winlock exit.

Berry reportedly pulled to the shoulder before driving off as the trooper approached on foot.

The chase briefly exited the freeway onto U.S. Highway 12 before resuming northbound on I-5. Berry allegedly reached speeds over 100 miles per hour as he passed vehicles while driving on the right shoulder and a pair of trucks on the left shoulder.

The probable cause affidavit states that Berry took I-5 exit 76 in Chehalis and blocked the off-ramp with his car before attempting to escape on foot.

A K9 unit was called in to track Berry, who reportedly surrendered from his hiding place in the bushes near an AM/PM before the dog found him.
