Roofing work started a fire that caused an estimated $15,000 in damage at the Callisons mint factory in Chehalis Wednesday afternoon, according to the Chehalis Fire Department.

The fire started at about 1 p.m. Wednesday, Chehalis Chief Ken Cardinale said. Contractors were installing roofing with a torch and inadvertently caught the roof’s wood structure on fire.

The fire traveled about 20 feet before it was discovered, Cardinale said. Fire crews from the Chehalis Fire Department, Lewis County Fire District 6 and the Riverside Fire Authority also responded and extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes.

Cardinale said the fire did damage to a beam and potentially caused $15,000 in damage.
