First Responders Battle Two House Fires in Rochester Over the Weekend

West Thurston Regional Fire Authority Personnel responded to two serious house fires in Rochester over the weekend — with the one likely starting from a build-up of lint and debris in a clothing dryer and vent along with combustible materials near the vent pipe.

No serious injuries were reported during either fire, according to posts from the fire department on social media.

Personnel from West Thurston Fire did not return a request for comment prior to press time.

At 7 p.m. Saturday, Firefighters responded to the 17800 block of Sargent Road Southwest to find a fire coming from the house’s attic and garage. People and dogs living inside the house were able to make it outside.

First responders successfully located and put out the fire, but the house sustained serious damage throughout. One occupant and one firefighter received medical evaluation and were released at the scene.

Investigators determined the fire was caused by lint buildup and improper storage of combustible materials.

About 30 firefighters from West Thurston, South Thurston, McLane/Black Lake, Riverside Fire Authority and East Olympia were on scene, while the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office provided traffic control by shutting down Sargent Road after a fire apparatus was almost struck by a distracted motorist.

Crews were dispatched to another house fire at 2 a.m. Sunday in the 17200 block of Shantra Lane Southwest. The house was fully engulfed in flame.

Residents were able to make it outside, with one sustained a laceration to the leg. The person was treated at the scene and released.

A long narrow driveway leading to the house provided a challenge for trucks hauling water as they backed down the driveway. Firefighters used hose lines to battle the blaze throughout the morning.

The house was destroyed and investigators are working to determine how the blaze started.

Firefighters from West Thurston, South Thurston, East Olympia, McLane/Black Lake and Grays Harbor/Oakville were on-scene.
