Firefighters saved six dogs — five puppies and their mother — from a fire that started in an apartment’s kitchen Thursday morning, according to the Riverside Fire Authority.

The dogs were taken to a veterinarian. Their owner also hurt his hand rescuing a sixth puppy, according to the RFA.

Firefighters responded just before 11 a.m. Thursday to the fire reported in the 600 block of South Silver Street in Centralia. The fire appears to have started on a stove in an apartment in the building, RFA Chief Mike Kytta said.

According to a press release, a man reported he was cooking food on a stove when he briefly left his apartment and went to another in the building.

“When he return(ed) and opened the door to the apartment, he found a fire on the stove extending into the cabinets above,” according to the RFA.

The man reportedly injured his hand on broken glass attempting to rescue his dog and her puppies. The man evacuated with one puppy.

Fire crews arrived and found the other five puppies and their mother.

“They were moved to fresh air and received oxygen therapy from an AMR ambulance that was on the scene,” according to the RFA press release.

One puppy, seriously injured, was taken to a veterinarian for treatment.

Damage from the fire was contained to a single unit in the apartment building, and the occupant is staying with relatives, according to the RFA.

“This is a very unfortunate event and too often seen,” according to the RFA press release. “Unattended cooking is the number one cause of fires in the home in the United States.”
