A Montana man died after being taken to Harborview Medical Center Tuesday following a crash that occurred when he attempted to pass a vehicle on the right shoulder while traveling on state Route 507 about 2 miles north of Tenino, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The 21 year old Kalispell man was initially identified by the state patrol, but his name was removed from a recent press release pending notification of his next of kin. He was driving northbound in a 2013 Ford Fusion at about 6:30 p.m. when he attempted to pass a 1989 flatbed pickup truck driven by 71-year-old Tenino resident Douglas Gardner on the right shoulder. The two vehicles collided.

Gardner was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending, according to the State Patrol. It’s unknown if drugs or alcohol played a factor.

The Ford Fusion was totaled and the pickup truck was driven from the scene.

State Route 507 was blocked for three hours and 35 minutes.
