Chehalis Police Department Reports Scam Targeting Small Businesses

A scam is targeting local businesses, according to the Chehalis Police Department.

“In this scam, the caller speaks with an employee telling them some type of story, such as their supervisor is under investigation, or they are looking into a fraud,” according to a news release from the police department. “They may even know the employee’s name. In the end, the caller requests the employee use money from the business to purchase gift cards.”

The police department is advising that a stranger asking you to purchase gift cards, send money or give out personal information over the phone is probably running a scam. Scammers sometimes threaten to arrest the victim if they don’t do as asked.

“Please be cautious of phone calls requesting money, or personal information,” according to the police department. “If you’re unsure if the call is a scam or not,  please feel free to call your local police department.”
