A Chehalis man was charged with a single count of assault after he allegedly choked his roommate and threatened him with a shotgun during a dispute.

Jared R. Boyes, 36, was charged Monday with second-degree assault. He was placed on $100,000 cash bail during a preliminary court hearing Monday.

According to Lewis County Sheriff’s Office Chief Bruce Kimsey, citing incident reports, a call came to dispatch at around 11:08 p.m. Saturday from a person in the 3800 block of State route 6 in Chehalis. The caller said his roommate, Boyes, had assaulted him and held him against his will.

Deputies arrived on the scene at around 11:26 p.m., said Kimsey, where they got in touch with the alleged victim. That’s when deputies learned, said Kimsey, that Boyes allegedly pushed the victim and they became engaged in a physical fight.

At some point, Boyes allegedly brandished a 12-gauge pump shotgun and began to count down from three. There was a struggle for the gun, and Kimsey said reports seem to reflect a nasty brawl. At some point during the alleged altercation, Boyes reportedly choked the victim.

The victim had some injuries from being choked and struck, but did not require hospitalization, said Kimsey.

Boyes was taken into custody at the scene and the shotgun was taken as evidence. When deputies recovered the gun, they found that it was unloaded, said Kimsey.

During a preliminary hearing in Lewis County Superior Court, Deputy Prosecutor Joel DeFazio recommended a $100,000 cash bond, saying the allegations against Boyes represent a threat to public safety and to the victim.

Defense attorney Rachael Tiller argued for the lighter bail of $25,000 cash. She said Boyes has no previous felony history, and one misdemeanor conviction several years prior.

Judge Joely O’Rourke opted for the harsher option, saying although Boyes has no felony history, the allegations were still concerning.

Boyes has an arraignment hearing scheduled for Sept. 27.
