Vader Couple Charged With Homicide by Abuse for Death of Boy, 3

More than a month after their arrests, a couple from Vader accused of killing a 3-year-old boy on Oct. 5 entered pleas of not guilty to their charges in Lewis County Superior Court Thursday.

Danny and Brenda Wing were arrested Nov. 7 on suspicion of homicide by abuse, or, as an alternative, first-degree manslaughter for the death of Jasper Henderling-Warner.

Both entered not guilty pleas to the charges Thursday.

When asked if he understood his rights relative to trial, Danny Wing said: “Well I’ve never been to trial, but I’m sure my attorney will explain it to me.”

Superior Court Judge Richard L. Brosey informed Danny Wing of some of those rights.

Danny Wing is represented by Todd Pascoe, a Vancouver-based defense attorney.

Aside from Danny Wing’s statement, neither he nor his wife said anything beyond entering their not guilty pleas and that they understood the charges.

Brosey set trial for both to begin Jan. 26, 2015. Senior Deputy Prosecutor Will Halstead said he expected to make a decision on whether to consolidate the defendants’ cases soon.

Brenda Wing, 27, will have an omnibus hearing on Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. The court scheduled 26-year-old Danny Wing’s omnibus hearing for Jan. 8 at 3 p.m.

Both were scheduled to be arraigned last Thursday, but the hearing was postponed to allow for Brenda Wing’s new attorney, John Crowley, to be present.

Jasper’s mother allegedly asked the Wings, who were living in Vancouver at the time, to care for him for year beginning in July, according to court documents.

Danny Wing told The Chronicle during a November interview at the Lewis County Jail that both he and his wife and been using heroin during the weeks leading up to Jasper’s death. The couple said they had tried to save the boy with CPR on Oct. 5, the day he died.
