Lewis County Jail Inmate Accused of Threatening to Kill Staff

An inmate in the Lewis County Jail is facing two new criminal charges after allegedly threatening to kill jail and their families.

Joseph Lee Nickols, 33, of Centralia, allegedly threatened to kill jail staff in a letter intercepted by the jail on Thursday. Judge James Lawler ordered Nickols to be held on $500,000 bail during a hearing Monday.

According to court documents, the letter threatened the staff members who he believed were intercepting and reading his mail.

Nickols’ criminal history includes convictions for violation of the uniform controlled substance act, tampering with a witness, residential burglary, first-degree theft, trafficking in stolen property and violation of a protection order.
