Area Fire Chiefs Host Homeowner Preparedness Classes

Three Lewis County fire chiefs have scheduled a series of classes intended to teach homeowners how to protect their property in the event of a wildfire.

The classes will be conducted by Chehalis Fire Chief Ken Cardinale, Riverside Fire Authority Chief Mike Kytta and Lewis County Fire District 6 Chief Tim Kinder.

“The course is based on creating a defensible space of at least 30 feet to 100 feet around any homes or other structures,” Cardinale told The Chronicle in an email. “We will be discussing ways that homeowners can help us help them, by removing combustibles from around their homes.”

Homeowners should remove leaves and needles off roofs, mow grass and limb trees to prevent damage from fires, among other precautions.

“In addition, we will be talking about the “Ready, Set, Go” program and encouraging homeowners to sign up on the Lewis County Alert System, which is our best method to notify property owners that a fire, law emergency is occurring or to notify them of any other urgent message,” Cardinale wrote.
