Two high school students suffered serious injuries during football games Friday night and one was reported in critical condition Sunday at Harborview Medical Center.
Evergreen senior Kenny Bui underwent emergency surgery for unreported injuries and remains in intensive care in critical condition, said Harborview spokeswoman Susan Gregg.
Adna senior David Young suffered a C1 neck fracture, said coach K.C. Johnson, and has been fitted with a halo brace. He is in serious condition in intensive care.
Both injuries happened while the players were making tackles.
Bui was hurt in the fourth quarter of a game against Highline High School at Highline Memorial Field. He was transported to Harborview by ambulance.
Gregg said Bui's family is asking for privacy.
Johnson said Young was injured during the fifth play of the game against Napavine when he made a tackle. He got right up after the play and jogged to the sideline, complaining of neck pain. At first, Johnson said, he thought he had a stinger.
"He said he was going to walk it off and we told him to wait until we got it checked out," Johnson said.
Young went to Centralia Hospital, then was transferred to Harborview.
"We couldn't have better news on our end," Johnson said. "We're really, really lucky that he's OK."
The injuries to Bui and Young happened a week after Ramon Angel-Oros, a 17-year-old from Pateros High School, collapsed during a football game on Sept. 25.
He had surgery to relieve swelling in his brain and is in satisfactory condition at Harborview, Gregg said.
