Editor’s Best Bet: Torch Run to Raise Funds for Special Olympics Athletes
Law enforcement is organizing a torch run through Lewis County Thursday to raise funds for local Special Olympics athletes.
This run begins at Napavine Police Department and winds 18.8 miles through scenic country backroads and main streets. The route stops at schools in the communities of Napavine and Chehalis, and continues to Centralia, where the run slows to a walk through downtown and run past several Centralia schools.
The event will end with a lunch at Fort Borst Park Kitchen 2.
Registration starts at 7 a.m. at Fort Borst Park Kitchen 2. Runners can park at Kitchen 2 and ride the bus to the starting line at the Napavine police station.
The association hopes to raise $6,000 for local Special Olympics athletes. Funds pay for registration fees, coaches, hotel and meals for the athletes and their families.
The Special Olympics Torch Run fee ($25) is a contribution to Special Olympics of Washington. Those who wish to donate, but not participate, may make a check to Centralia Police Officers Association.
The run occurs prior to the Special Olympics of Washington Summer Games (June 2-4) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

Plans Memorial
Day Observance
Centralia College will host its annual Memorial Day observance at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in front of the Hanson Building. The community is invited to attend.
The featured speakers this year are two Centralia College student veterans, Carlos Santini and Sherri Mellott.
Santini served eight years in the U.S. Army, including four years with 671st Engineering Company out of Portland as a 12C Bridge Crew member and demolition specialist. He was deployed to Kuwait in 2003 under Operation Enduring Freedom.
In 2003, his orders changed to Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was in Iraq for one year repairing and building bridges, guarding enemy prisoners, conducting checkpoints, as well as serving as a gate guard, on convoy security missions, river patrols, roadside bomb-clearing, and clearing homes of insurgents or enemy combatants.
After returning, he served three years with 141 HHC Oregon National Guard as a material contracting specialist. In August 2005, he was deployed to New Orleans in support of operations for Hurricane Katrina; he helped search buildings for survivors and others. He served 2008-09 with the Idaho National Guard HHC 145th.
Mellott served as a private first class in the 66th Aviation Brigade out of Fort Lewis. She worked as a 92A parts clerk in the motor pool. She joined in 2003 and, upon arriving home from basic and subsequent training, she was handed orders for Iraq. There, she served in the combat unit in the 81st Brigade.
Also speaking at the event will be Heidi Palmer, an Army veteran and Centralia College’s Vet Corps navigator, and Bob Mohrbacher, Centralia College president. The Lewis County Marine Corps League Detachment 119 will post and retire the colors.
Refreshments will be available after the ceremony in the Veterans Center in Kemp Hall Room 103.

Hold Open Houses in
Pe Ell, Morton
Assured Hospice will be holding volunteer opportunity open house events this May and June in Pe Ell and Morton.
At each of these events, agency hospice workers and clinicians will be on hand to provide information on how those interested can volunteer in their local community.
The open house in Pe Ell will be held 2-4 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Street Manor, located at 616 Maple St. The open house in Morton will take place noon-2 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, at Rivers Coffeehouse & Bistro, located at 212 Main Ave.
Refreshments will be served and door prizes awarded at both events.
Volunteers are called on to provide emotional support and practical assistance to enhance the comfort and quality of life for patients, their families and loved ones. They represent many age groups and both genders, and are an indispensible part of the hospice care team.
The services they are asked to provide might include being available for companionship and listening, simply “being there,” or reading to and writing cards or letters for a patient.

Gilmore to Give Lyceum Talk at Centralia College
Tim Gilmore, retired Centralia High School teacher and coach, will be sharing his experiences working with orphanages in Cambodia during a Lyceum presentation Wednesday at Centralia College.
Gilmore’s talk will be at 1 p.m. in Washington Hall 103.

Plaque to Honor Japanese Internees
Men, women and children, wearing yellow numbered Army identification tags, gathered at the Chehalis Train Depot on June 2, 1942. These Japanese-Americans were waiting for a train to take them to the soon-to-be completed Tule Lake internment camp in California in connection with President Franklin Roosevelt’s Executive Order 9066 authorizing the internment of those of Japanese descent.
The order was in the wake of the United States entering the war while the paranoia of Japanese infiltrators was at its peak. The majority of those interned, around 120,000 Americans, were born in the U.S.
On Saturday, one day past the 75th anniversary of the gathering, the Lewis County Historical Museum will dedicate a plaque with the names of the Americans from the Lewis County area who were put on the train. The ceremony will begin 11 a.m. at the museum, the event has been dubbed “Remembrance Day.”
Land Trust to Host BioBlitz on Goodrich Road
The Chehalis River Basin Land Trust is hosting a free BioBlitz 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at 1545 Goodrich Road in Centralia.
The Bioblitz is a rally to find as many species of plants, animals or fungi as possible. There will be a set area and a set time, making it a race against the clock to learn about flora and fauna.

Corbet Theatre to Feature ‘Soaring Soloists’ Concert
The Pacific Northwest Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of David Judd, will be presenting the annual “Soaring Soloists” free concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre.
The concert will feature three local musicians accompanied by the orchestra. Allen Lesser, violin, will play “Romance in F minor” by Dvorak; Sarah Gilligan, harp, will play “Salzedo Tango” by Carlos Salzedo; and Andrew Pak, piano, will play “Piano Concerto No. 17 2nd Movement” by Mozart. .
The orchestra will also perform “Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland, “Hungarian Dance No. 5 and 6” by Brahms, “Finale Symphony No. 5” by Shostakovich and “A Whole lot of Symphony Themes” arranged by Douglas Wagner.
This will be David Judd’s final concert as director of the PNCO. After seven years leading the orchestra, and retirement from a long career as a public school music teacher in June, he is “looking forward to a more open schedule for travel and family time”.

Community Band to Present Concert at Corbet Theatre
The Lewis County Community Band will present a free concert of instrumental music June 6 at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre.
The concert will begin at 7:30 pm. All are welcome, including families with small children.
The program will include “Give Us This Day” (Short Symphony for Wind Ensemble) by David Maslanka, “Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Philip Sousa and “Colonial Song” by Percy Grainger. Aimee Dietz will be a guest conductor on “Hymn from Jupiter” from Holst’s “The Planets.”
The Lewis County Community Band has been directed by Louie Blaser and Karl Scarborough since Fall Quarter of 2007. Blaser teaches band for Centralia School District and Scarborough teaches band and choir for Winlock School District.
The band is comprised of almost 50 local wind and percussion musicians from Lewis, Thurston, Pacific, and Cowlitz counties. Though geared toward adult musicians, the band is also open to college and high school musicians. Check out the Lewis County Community Band on FaceBook for more information.

Retired WSU Prof to Speak at Mycological Society Meeting
Jim Freed, a retired Washington State University professor, will be the guest speaker at the June 6 meeting of the Southwest Washington Mycological Society.
His topic will be “Management of Native Forest Lands for Sustainable Production of Fungi.”
“If you know what trees, shrubs and plants that mushroom grow in association with, odds are you will have a greater chance of finding where they’ll be growing,” Freed said.
His primary focus and specialty for the past 40 years has been on the special forest products found in the Pacific Northwest, while conducting research and administering educational programs dealing with the management, manufacturing and marketing of native plants for food, medicinal uses, crafts, landscape plants, flora products, Christmas greenery and trees.
Freed has worked with commercial harvesters, land managers and wild-crafters to identify natural mushroom production areas in our state spanning.
The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the WSU-Lewis County Extension meeting room, located in the basement of the Lewis County Courthouse near the west entrance. Those with accessibility issues may find the east entrance more accommodating.

The choirs will be singing Vivaldi’s “Gloria” with student soloists and guest musicians as accompanists. The second half of the program will be lighter with all American music including gospel and jazz styles. The concerts will be directed by Vicki Jardine-Tobin.
Both concerts are open to the public. There is no charge for the concert at Centralia College, but there is a charge of $5 for the concert at Pierce College.

Transgender Support Group to Speak at Lyceum
During a Wednesday, June 7, Lyceum presentation at Centralia College, members of a local transgender support group will be giving insight into how others provide support and understanding to transgender people.

The Centralia College Jazz Ensemble will be presenting a free concert featuring jazz, Latin and rock music at 7 p.m. Friday, June 9, at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre.

Retired Army Sergeant to Speak About Women in Vietnam
Retired Army Sgt. Major Donna Lowery a veteran of the Vietnam War, will be speaking at the Vernetta Smith Chehalis Timberland Library 2-3 p.m. Saturday, June 10.
She was one of the first group of women chosen to serve in the war in a non-medical capacity. Decades later, Lowery and a 20-member research team collected stories that became the book, “Women Vietnam Veterans: Our Untold Stories.”
Lowery will talk about her book and the history it chronicles.

Mount St. Helens to Host Art Eruption
Art Eruption is coming to the Mount St. Helens Science and Learning Center 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 10.
From 1 to 3 p.m., music will be provided by Lewi Longmire and the Left Coast Roasters.
Mixed media art workshops with Art-Adventures.com will be 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2:30-4 p.m.
Form noon-1 p.m. and 3-4 p.m., there will be youth nature art workshops.
All-day activities will include activities and crafts for all agers and a photo booth station with props.
Also planned are nature photography workshops.
Lunch will be available for purchase 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
A suggested donation of $10 per person is being requested.

Local Chefs to Be Featured at Chefs Night Out
Local chefs will be displaying their culinary skills at 6 p.m. Saturday, June 17, during Chef’s Night Out at the Lucky Eagle Casino Event Center.
Chef’s Night Out brings together Lewis County’s finest restaurants and chefs under one roof for an evening full of culinary creativity and excitement. Guests will enjoy delectable samples from each chef and have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dishes in the Top Chef competition.
Also featured are live and silent auctions, superb cuisine, Cuban music and more.
Over the last eight years, Chef’s Night Out, presented by United Way of Lewis County, has brought in over $300,000, helping thousands of children and families in Lewis County achieve their full potential and lead healthy, productive lives.
Tickets are $75 person. Tables of 10 available. Advanced reservations are required.

Chili Cook Off Coming to Awesome RV
Awesome RV in Chehalis has partnered with the International Chili Society to host the Official Washington State Chili Cook Off at the Awesome RV dealership on Saturday, June 17.
Top cooks from all over the nation will come to compete for a spot in the World’s Championship Chili Cook Off.
There will be three different competitions taking place (red chili, chili verde and salsa). The event is open to the public and tasting sampler kits are available in exchange for a small donation.
All proceeds raised from this event will go to Visiting Nurses.
Time schedule:
7-8:30 am. — unload and setup
9:30 a.m. — cooks meeting (all categories)
10 a.m. — chili verde, stoves on
11:30 a.m. — salsa, judges meeting
Noon — salsa, turn in for judging
12:30 pm — chili verde, judges meeting
1 p.m. — chili verde, turn in for judging
2:30 pm — red chili, judges meeting
3 p.m. — red chilli, turn in for judging
4:30-5 p.m. — award Ceremony
Entry fees are:
Red chili — $35 plus one gallon of People’s Choice Chili, (may be prepared at home, including beans); chili verde — $25; salsa — $15

Leap the Levee 5K Coming
The 2017 Leap the Levee 5k run/walk will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 17, starting at the Chehalis-Centralia Airport.
The race commences at the Scott Crossfield Building. The initial stage is south of the airport buildings. It then follows the levee to the north, eventually doubling back on the levee and returns to the start/finish line.
Awards will be presented to the top three males and females, winning masters runners and overall top male and female.
Day of race registration is $15 or $25 with a T-shirt (pending availability).
