Editor’s Best Bet HRN to Have Masquerade Ball in Centralia

The Human Response Network will be having a Masquerade Ball 7-11 p.m. Saturday at the Lewis & Clark Hotel ballroom in Centralia.

The evening will feature music by the Sound of Swing Big Band, dancing, heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts, a no-host bar, door prizes and silent auction.

The event will support victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in Lewis County, and support the emergency shelter.

Tickets are $25 for a single and $40 for a couple. Masks will be for sale at the door for $5.

‘Grease!’ Coming to Evergreen Playhouse

The Evergreen Playhouse will be presenting its first play in their 2016-2017 season, the musical “Grease!”, the last three weekends in October.

The show tells the tale of Danny and Sandy, who have to strive to overcome their own inadequacies and the pressures put on them by their friends in order to find love. A story that celebrates Americana culture in the ’50s, the show centers around burger joints, fast cars and playing music.

Performances are Oct. 14-16, Oct. 20-23 and Oct. 27-30. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 2 p.m. and Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

Director Shane Rivers says, “This show is just a really good time, and it explores the lengths that people go to find companionship in their lives. It encapsulates what it means to be young, energetic and eager for love.”

Victoria Banks to Perform at Centralia College

Victoria Banks, voted female vocalist of year in 2010 by the Canadian Country Music Association, will be performing at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Centralia College’s Corbet Theatre.

The performance by Banks and her group is called “Natural Woman: Songs and Stories for the Soul.” It will include the greatest female hits of all time, plus some of Banks’ original songs.

Banks’ performance is part of the Lewis County Concerts series.

Tickets may be purchased on a space-available basis just before the concert for $35. The box office opens at 6:45 p.m.

‘Expanding Your Horizons’ Coming to Centralia College

Centralia College, TriO Talent Search and the American Association of University Women will be holding the 23st annual “Expanding Your Horizons” conference 8 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Saturday at Centralia College.

The conference’s emphasis is on motivating young women in grades six through nine to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Pacific Science Center will entertain everyone with a show called “Radical Reactions” in the Washington Hall’s Corbet Theater. Breakout sessions will then be available featuring 20 professional women who have excelled in STEM career fields.

A workshop for parents, “Transitioning from Middle School to High School,” will provide strategies from experts to help make the transition to high school easier and advice on financing a college education

‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ Coming to Fox Theatre

Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will be screening the next film in its 2016 Film Series, the 1953 comedy/romance “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,” at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.

In this film, Lorelei Lee (Marilyn Monroe) is a beautiful showgirl engaged to be married to the wealthy Gus Esmond (Tommy Noonan), much to the disapproval of Gus’ rich father, Esmond Sr., who thinks that Lorelei is just after his money. 

When Lorelei goes on a cruise accompanied only by her best friend, Dorothy Shaw (Jane Russell), Esmond Sr. hires Ernie Malone (Elliott Reid), a private detective, to follow her and report any questionable behavior that would disqualify her from the marriage.

Nutrition Seminar Coming to Chehalis Seventh-Day Adventist Church

A “Live Better, Live Longer” nutrition seminar will be held 1-5 p.m. Sunday and 6-8:30 p.m. Monday at the Chehalis Seventh-day Adventist Church in Chehalis.

The seminar will focus on how to stay healthy, reverse high blood pressure and diabetes, and prevent cancer. Featured will be Jim and Neva Brackett, authors of three best-seller vegetarian cookbooks. There will be lectures, recipe demos and samples.  

A “heart healthy” lunch will be served Sunday after the lecture.

Sumner Man to Talk About Palatines at Genealogy Meeting

Jim Johnson, from the Heritage Quest Research Library in Sumner, will be the guest speaker at the Oct. 18 meeting of the Lewis County Genealogical Society.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at John’s Lutheran Church, 2190 Jackson Highway, Chehalis.

Johnson’s subject will be “The Palatines.  Who are they?  And why should you care?”

Johnson will explain where the Palatines where they came from, where they settled and how you can find lists of Palatine names and information about these German and/or Irish ancestors. (Yes, Irish).  Those in attendance will discover many resources they can

Johnson is president of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists.  He has been active in genealogy for over 25 years and has been teaching genealogy topics throughout the Northwest for the last 15 years.
