Historical Ride Winds Through Rural Lewis County

The Lewis County Historical Ride, one of Lewis County’s longest-running organized bicycle rides, will be held Saturday.

Riders will start and end at Bethel Church, 132 Kirkland Road, Chehalis.

Easy 20- and 40-mile routes will be offered, along with moderate 68- and 100-mile routes. All routes take riders through some of Lewis County’s prime back roads and offer views of some natural wonders, wildlife, farm life and more.

Choose the 68- or 100-mile ride to get the best experience and glide through scenic prairies and rolling hills in the northern, central and southern portions of Lewis County. The longer routes take participants by three of Lewis County’s most important cultural heritage sites.

The shorter routes offer an opportunity for families to enjoy a ride on country roads with very little traffic to worry about. The 20- and 40-mile rides go through Napavine on some very scenic roads that offer views of Mount Rainier and Mount St. Helens on a clear day.

Food stops are included in the ride, and the course is marked. SAG wagons will also sweep the course, and members of the local amateur radio group assist in taking accountability at each checkpoint.

Rest stops are available at three historical areas: the Evaline School, a two-room schoolhouse north of Winlock; Cowlitz Mission (more formally known as St. Francis Xavier Mission), the oldest Catholic congregation in Washington state; and the Claquato Church, one of the longest-standing churches in the western United States.

Cost is $20 for adults; children under 15 are free. Registration information is available at www.chehaliscentraliaoptimistclub.org, or call 360-388-7199 or 360-669-3386.

Fairgrounds to Host Community Garage Sale

The Spring Community Garage Sale will be Saturday at the Southwest Washington Fairgrounds.

Early-bird shoppers can enter at 8 a.m. for $5. General public sale hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m.  Adult admission is $3. Kids age 12 and under are free with a paid adult. Parking is free in fairgrounds lots.

Food vendors will be serving all day. Vendors are located in the Grandstand, Expo, Community Events, Pigeon, Poultry, 4-H Hall and 4-H Barn buildings.

An Arts, Crafts & Gifts Show is also being held in the Blue Pavilion as part of the event. Garage Sale and Gift/Craft Show vendor spaces are still available. For more information, call the fair office at 360-740-2655, or go to www.southwestwashingtonfairgrounds.org.

Borst Home to Open to Visitors

The historic Borst Home living history museum is open to visitors on Saturday. The house, schoolhouse, carriage house, and historic gardens will be open 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Volunteers and living historians will be on site to give tours and assist visitors with questions.

An informational program will be given at the historic schoolhouse at approximately 2 p.m. Each program focuses on a different topic relevant to the pioneer period. The topic for the month of May is “The Library — The Importance of Books.” The school bell will ring to let visitors know that the program is beginning.

The Borst Home, located in the south end of Fort Borst Park, Centralia, is open once a month from spring to fall. Visitors will learn about the history of the community and the important pioneer families who founded it. Admission is free, but donations are accepted.
