Editor’s Best Bet: Make Plans to Attend Winlock Pickers’ Fest

David Grier is headlining this year’s Winlock Pickers’ Fest, which gets underway Thursday and runs through the weekend at The festival officially starts Friday, but jamming and camping begins Thursday at Winolequa Park.

David’s dad, Lamar, joined Bill Monroe’s Bluegrass Boys when David was 4. Two years later, David began playing the guitar. His early influences include Doc Watson, Tony Rice and family friend Clarence White — who many consider the original bluegrass flatpicker.

Today, Grier is regarded as one of the premier acoustic guitarists in the world. Recognized by Acoustic Guitar Magazine in 2000 as one of the Artists of the Decade and named Guitar Player of the Year three times by the International Bluegrass Music Association, Grier has played on four Grammy Award-winning albums.

Other performers will be Rio Con Brio, Fern Hill, Roosevelt Road, and Aarun and Jonathan.

Tickets for the Friday and Saturday performances are $10. Sunday is free. Camping is available at $10 per night. Tickets are available only at the event.

In addition to performances on Friday and Saturday evening, workshops are being held Saturday morning. A Gospel music show will be Sunday morning.

A full schedule for Pickers’ Fest can be found at winlockpickersfest.com/schedule/.

Cheese Days Gets Underway Thursday With Toast of the Big Cheeses

The annual Toledo Cheese Days is coming to the Cowlitz Basin town Thursday through Sunday.

Cheese Days gets underway Thursday with the Toast of the Big Cheeses, who this year are Ruth Herren and Nora and Dick Shannon. The event at the Morgan Arts Center costs $12.50 per person.

At 6 p.m. Friday, a frog jumping contest will be at the high school track. Kids can bring their own frogs or rent one. The contest, which raises money for Toledo High School classes, draws more than 100 participants.

Among the events on Saturday are all you can eat pancakes at the senior center, the parade, car show and free cheese sandwiches served at the Presbyterian Church following the parade. Other Saturday events include newer traditions such as: a golf tournament; the Cheddar Challenge fun run; a wine and cheese tasting event; and the Toledo Made Art Exhibit at Art Gallery 505.

One of the bigger Saturday events is the car show, which had about 300 cars last year and is expected to be even bigger this year.

An all-town picnic takes place Sunday afternoon at the community park by the river. Many alumni who visit for Cheese Days spend Sunday at the park. At 11:30 a.m. the Toledo Lionesses sell cheesecake by the slice and at 12:30 p.m. you can purchase barbecued beef prepared by the Toledo Lions, some of whom arrive at around 4:30 a.m. to begin cooking.

10,000 Bicyclists Heading to Lewis County Area for STP

The Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic will once again be making its way through towns in the Lewis County area this weekend.

This area, particularly the Twin Cities, serves as a major stopping point, both for the riders who are covering the entire trip in one day and those who are spending the night here before completing the ride on Sunday.

Centralia College is the official midpoint for STP. The college provides tent and RV camping, as well as indoor overnight spaces in the school’s gym.

The college also offers a food stop at the end of Walnut Street, a beer garden across from the Student Center, food vendors, and both sit-down and to-go breakfasts in the cafeteria.

STP limits the number of riders to 10,000, and once again the event has sold out. Jerry Baker, 72, Seattle, has ridden all 35 years.

Enjoy Free ‘Music on the Hill’ at the Seminary Hill Natural Area

A new event is coming to Centralia’s wooded downtown hillside. From 10 a.m. until noon on  Saturday, a free “Music on the Hill” interactive concert will be held at the Seminary Hill Natural Area.

Learn how to play ukuleles and South American wooden flutes with guided, hands-on lessons.

This is a family-friendly, all-ages event.

As with all free events at the Seminary Hill Natural Area, free refreshments and cookies will be available.

The event will take place at the main entrance to the natural area, at the eastern end of Locust Street at the intersection of Barner Drive.

There are still opportunities for those interested in performing music at this event. Contact brianmittge@hotmail.com to learn more.

‘Father of the Bride’ to Be Shown at Fox Theatre

Historic Fox Theatre Restorations will screen the next film in its 2015 Movie Series, the 1950 comedy/romance film “Father of the Bride,” at 2 and p.m. Saturday at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.

In this 1950 classic, rated PG, proud father Stanley Banks remembers the day his daughter, Kay, got married. Starting when she announces her engagement through to the wedding itself, the audience learns of all the surprises and disasters along the way.

Fred Beeks will be on hand to play the Fox Theatre Wurlitzer, and sponsor Lucky Eagle Hotel & Casino will have prizes to give away as well.

Admission for the movie is $8 per person, $7 for members and $20 per family (three to four persons).

Presale tickets are available at Book ‘n’ Brush in Chehalis, at Holley’s Place, HUBBUB, Santa Lucia Coffee and PostNet in Centralia or online at http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/1761372.

For more information, contact the Fox Theatre at (360) 623-1103. All proceeds from the event benefit the restoration of the Fox Theatre.
