Editor’s Best Bet: Ceremonies to Honor Departed Military Veterans

Ceremonies  to honor deceased military members will take place at local cemeteries on Memorial Day Monday. These are being conducted by American Legion Post 101 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3409 in Winlock.

The day’s schedule is as follows.

8:30 a.m. — Meet at Veterans Clubhouse, 575 Nevil Road, Winlock

9:30 a.m. — Napavine Cemetery

10 a.m. — St. Urban Cemetery

10:30 a.m. — Vader Catholic Cemetery

11 a.m. — Little Falls Cemetery

Noon — Winlock Cemetery

2 p.m. — St. Francis Cemetery

2:30 p.m. — Lone Hill Cemetery

3 p.m. — Toledo Cemetery

A potluck lunch for ceremony volunteers will be at the Veterans Clubhouse immediately following the noon ceremony.

At 1 p.m. will be the Ed Leonard Memorial dedication at the Veterans Clubhouse flagpole.

The dedication is the culminating event for a Boy Scout Eagle project by Aaron Bratina, of Boy Scout Troop 324, sponsored by American Legion Post 101. 

Leonard, a Winlock native, was shot down and subsequently captured during the Vietnam War. He was incarcerated in the Hanoi Hilton alongside Sen. John McCain for over four years. Leonard died this past Veterans Day. 

This this memorial is being placed on property that was originally homesteaded by his great grandfather, and is now the post home for Post 101 and VFW Post 3409.

‘The Goonies’ to Be Screened at Fox Theatre

Historic Fox Theatre Restorations and Wolf Electric LLC are airing “The Goonies” at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at the Fox Theatre in downtown Centralia.

 In this 1985 action/adventure film, two brothers find out they might lose their house they are desperate to find a way to keep their home. They find a treasure map and bring some friends along to find it. They are all out looking for the “X” and trying to get away from a group of bad guys who also want the treasure. The film is rated PG.

Admission is $8 per person, $7 for HFTR members, and $20 per family (three to four persons).
