Port of Centralia Agrees ‘In Principle’ to Extend Contract With Centralia Station Developer

While Powell Development has yet to announce a new anchor tenant for the Centralia Station project, the developer has agreed to extend its contract with the Port of Centralia until the end of this year.

When asked during the most recent Port of Centralia Commission meeting on Feb. 20 if Powell Development has received any interest in the project, executive director Kyle Heaton said, “I wouldn’t disclose if he did.”

“That’s his business,” Heaton said. “They are under contract, so he has until the end of the year to figure it out. … We extended that. … I think there are some serious headwinds there.”

Heaton said later that day that the Port of Centralia and Powell Development are pending on extending the contract until the end of 2019 and agreed “in principle.” On Thursday, Heaton responded to request for comment that he has no further updates at this time. He did not respond Friday to request for clarification regarding the extension with Powell Development.

In 2017, Powell Development entered into a real estate and purchase agreement with the port for roughly 28 acres of land, which was previously set to expire near the end of this month. The developer expected Fred Meyer to serve as the retail development’s anchor tenant. In December 2018, however, the port announced that those negotiations were over. Powell Development is currently searching for a new anchor tenant.
