Lewis County Breweries to Participate in Statewide Open House

Posted

This Saturday, more than 140 breweries all over Washington will open their doors to beer drinkers looking to try something new during the ninth annual Washington Beer Open House. Among them are Lewis County’s own Jones Creek Brewing near Pe Ell, and Dick’s Brewing in Centralia.

In 2006, The Washington Beer Commission became the first commodity commission for craft beer in the United States. The Commission is allowed to produce up to 12 beer tasting festivals per year and to use the proceeds to promote Washington’s craft breweries. Washington currently has more than 280 breweries in the state and remains the only state with a beer commission.

Each participating brewery has their own unique events and deals incorporated into the open house event. Jones Creek Brewing will be giving tours of their brewery throughout the day. Owner Tim Moriarty is preparing for the brewery’s second year participating in the open house. During the event, he will have grain and hops out for people to smell and taste. This year, starting at noon, they will also be brewing a beer for people to see the process — a mystery to a lot of people, Moriarty said.

“People can go through an danalyze and kind of understand different hops, different malts so they can understand the raw ingredients, where it starts and then how it ends up,” Moriarty said. “Then seeing the process from beginning to end if they want to hang out for that long.”

Another highlight of the Open House at Jones Creek Brewing will be a barley wine brewed in December of 2017. They will also have the barley wine brewed in 2018 so that people can compare the taste and see what age can do to the beverage. For those who don’t like beer or have gluten allergies, the brewery will be offering a guest cider from Olympia.

“It’s fun to interact with the people,” Moriarty said. “It will be fun to have people come back and check out the process. If they want to sit here all day and ask me tons of questions, I’m more than willing to share my information with them.”

Jones Creek Brewing is a kid and animal-friendly place, so families are welcome to come to the open house together.

The Washington Beer Open House event will be 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, March 2, but each brewery can set their own schedule.
