A 70-year-old Oregon man died after he was ejected from his vehicle when it crashed at a high rate of speed into a concrete wall outside a Vader grocery store Tuesday morning, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol.
The man, whose name has not been released as authorities are still trying to contact his family, was apparently driving southbound on Winlock-Vader Road when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of state Route 506, according to a press release from the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The man was from Cottage Grove, Ore.
The vehicle traveled across state Route 506 and crashed into a concrete wall in the Mt. St. Helens Grocery store parking lot at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to Washington State Patrol spokesman Trooper Will Finn. The driver did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.
He was killed on impact, according to the sheriff’s office.
There were no signs the driver had attempted to brake before reaching the intersection, Finn said. It is unknown if a medical condition might have contributed to the crash.
There were no other people in the vehicle, but there was a dog, Finn said.
The dog is being treated for a possible broken back, according to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office.
The grocery store is located just east of the city limits of Vader.
