A popular coffee shop and deli along a well-traveled stretch of highway in south Lewis County sustained heavy damage from a large fire Tuesday evening.
Firefighters from Fire District 5 in Napavine responded at 7:41 p.m. to a report of flames at Mary’s Corner Espresso Company at the corner of Jackson Highway and U.S. Highway 12, about two miles east of where U.S. 12 meets Interstate 5.
Napavine firefighter Maria Kennedy said in a press release that fire had already breached the roof of the building and heavy smoke was present when firefighters arrived. Mutual aid arrived from Toledo, Winlock, Salkum and south Chehalis to help fight the blaze.
Firefighters blocked a portion of Jackson Highway as they fought the flames, but U.S. 12 generally stayed open during the incident.
No one was injured in the blaze, but Kennedy said the building sustained heavy fire and smoke damage. Investigators as of late Tuesday night were unsure what caused the fire.
Mary’s Corner Espresso Company, located at 4237 Jackson Highway, was a popular stopover that offered deli sandwiches, coffee and more. It opened in summer 2010, replacing the former Mary’s Corner Artist Center that had fallen into disrepair, as building owners Nathan and AeChea Jackins invested money to renovate the building and turn it into a coffee shop.
