Trial in Case of Abused Dog in Bucoda Postponed Again

After a status hearing in Thurston County Superior Court on Wednesday, the trials of two defendants in an animal cruelty case have been postponed again.

The trials center around an allegedly abused dog in Bucoda named Wolfy. After a continuance was granted, the trials were rescheduled for May 16.

Robert Leatherman, 52, and Jeffrey Gavin, 45, both of Bucoda, were charged in April 2015 with first-degree animal cruelty and second-degree animal cruelty respectively.

A necropsy completed after the dog was killed determined the situation to be an extreme case of animal cruelty and stated the dog suffered long-standing neglect.

Leatherman owned the dog.

Gavin was responsible for shooting the animal after pictures of the dog were circulated on social media, resulting in public outcry in October 2014. The necropsy revealed the dog died slowly after being shot multiple times.

Both defendants entered not guilty pleas in May 2015.
