A 3-year-old child in Vancouver was taken to the hospital after overdosing on methamphetamine Thursday, police said.

The child’s mother, Summer Justice Ward, 27, is accused of endangerment with a controlled substance, second-degree criminal mistreatment, obstructing a law enforcement officer and possession of a controlled substance for her alleged role in her child’s overdose, according to the Vancouver Police Department.

Police spokesperson Kim Kapp said the child was conscious and alert according to the last report police got after being taken to a nearby hospital.

Kim Kapp, a spokesperson for Vancouver police, said the child was conscious and alert according to the most recent update they received on the child’s condition.

Police and medical first responders arrived at a house near the 4000 block of Northeast 109th Street around 8 p.m. after receiving a report that the 3-year-old had overdosed on drugs and that the child’s grandmother had administered two doses of naloxone to restore the child’s breathing, police said in a statement.

First responders found Ward in a bedroom with the 3-year-old and forced their way in when Ward refused to allow them to enter, police officials said.

The officers who responded searched Ward for drugs and found a plastic bag filled with white powder that tested positive for methamphetamine, according to police.

Police arrested Ward and put her 3-year-old, along with Ward’s other child, a 2-year-old, into the custody of Washington State Child Protective Services.

Police said this was their second response to a child overdose that day.

Ward is in custody at Clark County Jail.
